India’s OGR Paper Market Holds Steady Before a Mild Correction

The Indian market for Oil & Grease Resistant (OGR) Paper remained stable through June and most of July before recording a marginal correction during the final week of the month.

Demand from foodservice, bakery, quick-service restaurants (QSRs), takeaway packaging, and confectionery applications remained steady but softened due to seasonal factors. At the same time, improved raw material availability and easing manufacturing costs contributed to a more competitive pricing environment.

Buyers largely adopted a cautious procurement strategy during the monsoon season, limiting purchases to confirmed orders while maintaining comfortable inventory levels. This kept overall market sentiment subdued despite stable consumption from key end-use industries.

What Supported OGR Paper Prices?

Before the recent decline, India’s OGR Paper market remained supported by relatively firm production costs and steady demand from the food packaging sector.

OGR Paper is manufactured using high-quality bleached pulp along with specialty barrier coating chemicals and functional additives, making fluctuations in these raw materials a key determinant of production costs.

During the first half of the year, stable pulp prices, elevated specialty chemical costs, and consistent demand from foodservice, bakery, and takeaway packaging sectors enabled manufacturers to maintain pricing discipline.

Healthy consumption from sustainable food packaging applications also helped keep prices stable across major markets.

As a result, OGR Paper prices remained unchanged for several weeks before easing cost pressures began influencing market dynamics.

OGR Paper Prices Ease on Lower Input Costs

What is happening in India’s OGR Paper market right now? After remaining stable for five consecutive weeks, OGR Paper prices witnessed a modest correction of 0.42% as easing production costs and cautious buyer sentiment weighed on the market.

The decline was primarily driven by improved availability of bleached pulp, which reduced raw material cost pressures for manufacturers. In addition, lower prices of barrier coating chemicals and improved availability of specialty additives further reduced production costs, enabling mills to offer more competitive pricing.

Meanwhile, lower energy, marine fuel, and freight costs reduced overall manufacturing and logistics expenses. The seasonal slowdown during the monsoon also softened demand from foodservice, bakery, and takeaway packaging sectors, with buyers largely restricting procurement to advance or immediate production requirements. These factors collectively resulted in a mild downward adjustment in OGR Paper prices.

OGR Paper Market Outlook

Looking ahead, the Indian OGR Paper market is expected to remain stable-to-soft in the near term. Comfortable availability of bleached pulp, lower specialty chemical costs, and reduced logistics expenses are likely to keep production costs favourable for manufacturers, limiting the scope for immediate price increases.

However, demand is expected to gradually improve ahead of the festive season as procurement from foodservice, bakery, QSR, confectionery, and takeaway packaging sectors gains momentum.

This could help stabilize market prices later in the third quarter, although any meaningful recovery will largely depend on changes in raw material costs and the pace of downstream demand.
