SBS Board Traders Watch Festive Demand for Next Price Move

The Indian market for Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS) Board remained largely stable through June and most of July before recording a marginal correction during the final week of the month.

Demand from premium packaging applications, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food & beverage, tobacco, and personal care products, remained steady but lacked the momentum required to support higher prices.

At the same time, comfortable raw material availability and easing production costs kept market sentiment subdued.

Buyers continued to follow a cautious procurement strategy, purchasing primarily against confirmed orders amid the seasonal slowdown caused by the monsoon. With sufficient inventories available across the supply chain, suppliers maintained competitive offers to protect market share.

What Supported SBS Board Prices?

Before the recent decline, India’s SBS Board market remained stable due to balanced demand from premium packaging industries and relatively firm production costs. As SBS is manufactured entirely from virgin bleached chemical pulp, fluctuations in global pulp prices have a direct impact on manufacturing costs and market pricing.

During the first half of the year, stable pulp prices and consistent demand from pharmaceutical, FMCG, and premium consumer goods sectors enabled manufacturers to maintain pricing discipline.

Although competition from imported SBS remained present, healthy domestic consumption helped keep prices largely unchanged across major markets.

This balanced supply-demand environment allowed SBS Board prices to remain stable throughout June and most of July before softer market fundamentals began influencing pricing.

SBS Board Prices Ease on Lower Production Costs

What is happening in India’s SBS Board market right now? Prices recorded a modest decline of 0.64% after remaining stable for five consecutive weeks.

The correction was primarily driven by abundant availability of bleached chemical pulp, which reduced raw material cost pressures for paper mills. In addition, the commissioning of a new chemical pulp plant in India reduced dependence on imported pulp, improving domestic availability and lowering production costs.

Meanwhile, lower energy, marine fuel, and freight costs reduced both manufacturing and logistics expenses, enabling suppliers to offer more competitive pricing.

The seasonal slowdown during the monsoon further weakened buying activity, with most converters limiting purchases to advance or immediate production requirements. These factors collectively resulted in a mild downward adjustment in SBS Board prices.

SBS Board Market Outlook

Looking ahead, the Indian SBS Board market is expected to remain stable-to-soft in the near term. Comfortable chemical pulp availability, lower logistics costs, and adequate domestic production are likely to keep pricing under pressure over the coming weeks.

However, demand is expected to improve as the festive packaging season approaches, particularly from pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics, and premium FMCG sectors.

This could help stabilize prices later in the third quarter, although any significant upward movement is likely to depend on stronger demand and changes in global pulp market fundamentals.
