Yellow Phosphorus prices have been climbing, but energy costs tell only part of the story. The market was already carrying supply side risks before the Hormuz disruption pushed crude higher.
Yellow Phosphorus production depends heavily on electricity, so rising energy costs quickly lifted production expenses across key producing regions. Yet the bigger development came from the fertilizer chain.
China continued to maintain tight phosphate export controls while fertilizer demand remained firm across several importing markets.
At the same time, a fire at a Yellow Phosphorus facility in Guizhou removed part of the available supply, while seasonal maintenance activities during April and May reduced market flexibility even further.
Yellow Phosphorus and Fertilizer Value Chain Impact
Most Yellow Phosphorus is converted into phosphoric acid and phosphate fertilizers. Any disruption at the phosphorus stage therefore moves downstream quickly.
Two developments stand out:
- Supply tightened because of production disruptions and maintenance activity
- Fertilizer buyers increased procurement as concerns over raw material availability grew

The six-week price trend reflected this shift. Weekly gains accelerated through March before slowing during April as buyers adjusted to higher replacement costs and supply conditions stabilized.
Another factor worth watching is sulphur. Supply concerns in sulphur and sulphuric acid markets pushed costs higher across the phosphate value chain. This created additional support for Yellow Phosphorus beyond the impact of energy alone.
Short Term Outlook for Yellow Phosphorus
The next one to three months will likely depend on energy costs, Chinese operating rates, and fertilizer procurement activity. Any additional outage could tighten availability quickly. On the other hand, softer downstream demand may slow the pace of gains.
The bigger question is whether buyers are treating this as a temporary cost spike or the start of a longer period of tighter phosphorus availability.
If supply disruptions continue while fertilizer demand remains steady, how many procurement teams are prepared for another round of cost pressure?
