After a 45% Aniline Price Rally, Buyers Face Rising Replacement-Cost Risk

Aniline Market Performance Across Key Regions in H1 2026

Aniline has been one of the strongest-performing aromatic intermediates of 2026. Price-Watch.ai spot data shows India’s West-coast domestic market climbing roughly 10% in Q1 and a further ~35% in Q2, a cumulative move of close to 45% in six months.

China rose ~19% and ~20% in the same two quarters (~40% cumulative), and by late July Chinese spot was running close to 60% above the same week of 2025. Europe, insulated by long-term contracts and weaker construction demand, lagged: ~10% higher in Q2.

Key Drivers Behind the Aniline Price Rally

Upstream. Benzene is ~56% of Aniline’s delivered cost, and Benzene has been on a cost-push of its own: crude held near year highs on Middle East tension, Chinese Benzene port inventories fell to multi-year lows, and Benzene operating rates sat at their weakest of the year. Nitric Acid and Hydrogen – the other reactive inputs – added a smaller but non-trivial ~2.5 % points of cost.

Downstream. Roughly two-thirds of global Aniline goes into MDI for polyurethane foams, and MDI demand from cold-chain, appliances and automotive stayed firm through Q2. Rubber antioxidants (6PPD), dyes and paracetamol intermediates absorbed the rest, and Indian buyers – structurally import-dependent, with domestic production covering barely half of demand – competed for the same cargoes as Chinese consumers.

Freight. Typhoon activity across the East and South China Seas in July–August closed berths at key export ports for several days at a time, pushed ISO-tank spot freight up ~30–40% and stretched India-bound transit times by 7–12 days. That single logistics shock added an estimated 2 % points to landed cost and, more importantly, let sellers hold offers firm while buyers scrambled for prompt material.

Aniline Manufacturing Process and Cost Structure

Every tonne of Aniline consumes roughly 0.85 Tonnes of Benzene, 0.55 Tonnes of Nitric Acid and about 65 kg of Hydrogen. The route is short, but two of its seven steps – nitration and Hydrogenation – are exothermic, catalyst-dependent and energy-hungry, which is why gas, steam and catalyst costs matter as much as feedstock when margins tighten.

Cost driver Share of cost H1-2026 move Pass-through to Aniline
Benzene ~56% ~ +20–25% ~ +12–14%
Nitric Acid ~11% ~ +8% ~ +1%
Hydrogen & energy ~15% ~ +10% ~ +1.5%
Freight (TYPHOON) ~5% ~ +30–40% (SPOT) ~ +2%
Tightness premium ~ +15–20% (INDIA)

The arithmetic in Table 2 is the key insight: feedstock and freight explain roughly 17 points of India’s ~45% rise. The remaining 15–20 points are a supply-tightness premium – and premiums, unlike feedstock, tend to mean-revert.

Aniline Market Outlook

The second half of 2026 will depend on the interaction between Benzene costs, downstream MDI demand, producer operating rates, import availability and freight conditions.

If Benzene remains elevated and downstream polyurethane demand continues to support MDI consumption, the cost base for Aniline is likely to remain firm. However, if supply availability improves and the tightness premium begins to unwind, some of the gains recorded during the first half of the year could reverse.

India remains particularly sensitive because of its high dependence on imported material. Any disruption to Asian cargo availability or freight could therefore produce a disproportionately large impact on Indian domestic pricing.

China’s market will remain an important indicator for the wider Asian balance, while Europe’s comparatively moderate increase suggests that regional contract structures and weaker construction demand can provide some insulation from the sharper Asian price movements.
