East Coast India’s Metallurgical Coke (Met Coke) market eased during the past week, with domestic prices declining by 0.83% as cautious steel demand, softer raw material costs, and uncertainty surrounding import quotas weighed on market sentiment.
After several months of firm pricing through the first half of 2026, the market has entered a period of consolidation, with buyers becoming increasingly selective in their procurement.

While the recent decline has been modest, it reflects a broader shift toward balanced supply conditions and more conservative purchasing across the steel value chain.
Monsoon Season Slows Steel Demand
The onset of the monsoon has reduced construction activity across eastern and southern India, leading to slower consumption of long steel products and weaker procurement by blast furnace operators.
Steel producers have largely shifted to need-based purchasing rather than rebuilding inventories, reducing spot market activity and giving buyers greater leverage during negotiations.
This seasonal slowdown has become one of the primary factors limiting price support in the domestic Met Coke market.
Imports Continue to Pressure Domestic Producers
Competitive offers from China and Indonesia continue to influence pricing despite India’s quota-based restrictions on low-ash metallurgical coke imports.
Imported cargoes remain attractive for several coastal steelmakers, limiting the ability of domestic producers to raise prices.
At the same time, mills are utilizing existing import allocations and inventories before committing to fresh domestic purchases, contributing to subdued spot market activity.
Lower Raw Material Costs Reduce Cost Pressure
The easing of Australian premium coking coal prices following earlier supply disruptions has reduced production costs for coke manufacturers.
Softer thermal coal prices and lower freight-related energy costs have further eased cost pressures across the supply chain.
With feedstock costs stabilizing, producers have gained greater flexibility to adjust selling prices in order to maintain sales volumes in a slower demand environment.
Import Policy Remains the Key Variable
Although India’s quota system for low-ash metallurgical coke imports is intended to support domestic producers, the policy has created short-term uncertainty rather than immediate tightening.
The market is closely watching how strictly import quotas will be enforced during the second half of the year.
Stronger enforcement could reduce the availability of imported material, increasing reliance on domestic producers and strengthening their pricing power.
Metallurgical Coke Market Outlook
Over the coming months, East Coast India’s Metallurgical Coke market is expected to remain range-bound with a mild bearish bias as monsoon-related demand weakness and cautious procurement continue to influence trading activity.
However, the medium-term outlook remains closely tied to import policy. If quota enforcement tightens and imported availability declines, domestic producers could regain pricing power and reverse the recent correction.
Alongside coking coal prices and steel production trends, import regulations are expected to remain one of the most important factors shaping India’s Met Coke market through the remainder of 2026.
