PTA Prices in India Rebound as Higher Import Parity and Rising PX Costs Reverse Earlier Losses

India’s Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) market experienced a sharp correction before recovering strongly during the review period. Lower-priced Chinese export offers significantly reduced import parity, compelling domestic suppliers to lower their offers to remain competitive.

High operating rates and ample inventories in China increased the availability of competitively priced cargoes, intensifying pricing pressure across the Indian market and limiting producers’ ability to maintain earlier price levels.

The correction gathered pace as easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East pushed crude oil prices lower, weakening Paraxylene (PX) values and reducing feedstock cost support across the PTA value chain.

Lower replacement costs for imported cargoes further pressured domestic prices, while polyester producers deferred fresh procurement, relying on comfortable inventories and anticipating additional corrections amid continued weakness in the Chinese market.

Weak Polyester Demand Extended the Decline

Softer feedstock costs coincided with subdued demand from polyester fibre, polyester filament yarn, and PET manufacturers.

Buyers largely restricted purchases to immediate production requirements instead of rebuilding inventories, while expectations of continued availability of competitively priced imports encouraged many participants to postpone fresh bookings.

Consequently, PTA prices in India remained under pressure as cautious downstream sentiment and comfortable inventories reduced trading activity. Domestic suppliers continued aligning their offers with weaker import parity and declining international market levels.

Higher Import Parity Revived the Market

Market sentiment improved during the second half of July as stronger Chinese export offers, supported by renewed U.S.-Iran tensions and concerns over potential supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz, lifted import parity across the Indian market.

At the same time, the recovery in crude oil prices strengthened Paraxylene (PX) values, increasing replacement costs for imported PTA cargoes and enabling domestic suppliers to revise their offers upward.

The recovery gained further momentum after the reinstatement of the 7.5% customs duty on petrochemical imports from 15 July, which increased import costs and reduced the competitiveness of overseas cargoes. In July 2026, PTA prices in India strengthened as domestic traders maintained firmer offers and polyester manufacturers gradually returned to replenish inventories.

Stronger Buying Restored Market Confidence

Improving procurement from polyester producers, combined with higher replacement costs and stronger import parity, supported a decisive recovery in domestic pricing.

As a result, the PTA price trend in India shifted from a sharp correction to a sustained recovery, reflecting stronger feedstock fundamentals and healthier downstream sentiment.

PTA Market Outlook

The near-term outlook remains cautiously optimistic as market participants continue monitoring crude oil movements, Paraxylene (PX) prices, Chinese export offers, import parity, and polyester operating rates. While feedstock costs will continue influencing production economics, downstream buying and import availability are expected to determine the pace of further price movements.

The bigger question is this Has the recent rebound marked the beginning of a sustained recovery in India’s PTA market, or will competitive imports and cautious downstream buying limit further gains once inventories are replenished?
